Neuromodulators (tox) like Botox Cosmetic® are a purified protein of botulinum toxin and when injected into muscles, it blocks the release of muscle contracting chemicals. The injection enables muscle relaxation and the result is smoother appearing skin.

Neurotoxin

Neuromodulators (tox) are commercially known as Botox Cosmetic ®, Dysport ®, Xeomin ®, Jeuveau ® and Daxxify ®, and are used to treat wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet. Neuromodulators (tox) are also used to treat various medical conditions including: primary axillary hyperhidrosis (severe underarm sweating), rosacea, TMJ, teeth grinding and migraines. Off-label use of tox can also be used to treat: chin creases, downturned smiles, horizontal neck lines and lines around the mouth (often described as smoker’s lines), and other areas. Our provider can further discuss the various options for treatment areas using neuromodulators (tox).

Neuromodulators (tox) work best for dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that are only seen with muscle movement), and are not recommended for deep static wrinkles (present without muscle movement), or wrinkles caused by loose sagging skin. A thorough medical history will be obtained during your initial consultation to see if you are a candidate. Patients should avoid lying down for 4-6 hours after treatment, massaging the area, exercise and sweating should also be  avoided for 24-48 hours. Results from your neuromodulator (tox) injection can be seen in 1-2 weeks. Effects can last 3-6 months.

No Botox®, is also approved for use to treat migraine headaches and TMJ. Ask us for more details and find out if you are a candidate.

Botox® will typically last 3-4 months depending on the activity and metabolism of the person. However, lasting 3-4 months does not mean minimal muscle movement for 3-4 months, since it gradually takes effect, has peak effect, and then begins to wear off over the 3-4 month period.

With small thin needles used to inject Botox®, discomfort can be kept to a minimum and any mild pain felt, resolves as soon as the injection is over. Patients do not go home in pain after the procedure. However, bleeding or bruising after an injection can occur.

The FDA approved on label dosing for 3 treatment areas is 64 units total. However, men and athletes typically need a higher dosage, since some have larger muscle mass, or metabolize the medication quicker through sweating and exercise.
